DNS propagation is the process of updating authoritative nameserver records across the global DNS hierarchy. After you change A, AAAA, CNAME, or MX records, resolvers worldwide refresh their caches at different TTL intervals. A DNS propagation checker compares answers from multiple public resolvers to reveal whether your new records are visible yet or if stale data persists in parts of the network.
Qikot queries Google, OpenDNS, and other public DNS-over-HTTPS endpoints for A records on your hostname. When all resolvers return matching IPs, propagation appears consistent. Divergent answers suggest the change is still rolling out, TTL has not expired everywhere, or misconfiguration exists at the registrar or CDN. This is common during migrations, CDN cutovers, and email provider switches.
DNS changes are not instantaneous. TTL values on old records control how long caches retain previous answers. Lower TTL before planned changes to speed propagation, then restore higher TTL for stability. Always verify both apex and www records, API subdomains, and mail-related entries when moving infrastructure.
This tool complements IP lookup for address discovery and uptime checks for HTTP availability after DNS settles. Because checks run from our remote servers, you get resolver answers as seen from cloud infrastructure rather than only your ISP's DNS.
Results are informational snapshots cached briefly on our servers. For complex setups involving geo-DNS or weighted routing, answers may legitimately differ by resolver location.
